03 June 2019- I have photographed poses of myself wearing my garments in the light installation space in Bowland - I have originally thought about displaying 2 photographs for each costume, therefore some costumes have only 2 different poses that I thought were relevant to showcase the story behind the piece Betrayal Backstabber Sheltered Wings Vivacious 8 Photos I Chose to Display - First of all, the photos were not taken in RAW, and are in low quality, which my face will not be shown clearly when enlarged - In addition, the photos do not really showcase the costumes well, and as I look at the camera for most photos, they seem very ordinary, instead of expressing a strong emotion through them - Furthermore, 2 poses for 1 costume does not seem to be expressive enough to showcase the full story of the costume, and how the poses relate to each other, therefore, I have thought about retaking them, and choose 3 poses for each costume 06 June 2019Raw Images - As the files are in raw, the format of these photos could not be uploaded on the webpage - With each of the costumes, I have chose 3-6 images out from the raw images for another round of 'elimination' Coloured Betrayal COLOURED BACKSTABBER - Coloured Sheltered Wings Coloured Vivacious Photos in Black and White- At the end, I have chose to exhibit 3 images on 4 different prints in black and white to showcase the costumes and the story behind each of it
- Although the colours would give viewers an impression of what the costumes mean, black and white allows more emotions to be carried out from the photographs, as it shift viewers focus from the costumes to my facial expression and makes viewers question about what my eyes are looking at, or what I'm thinking about

Re-designing the Tent- During last term, I have made the tent with only two sides, that has a hood and two pieces hanging from the hood, which could act as a scarf and wings, however it does not look like a tent, as it does not fully cover the whole body or secure the body in the clothing - I have decided to make the clothing with 4 cloths to build the sides of the tent, instead of just using 2 - Furthermore, I have also decided to add zips to the clothing to make it look more like a tent I aim to create a 'tent' clothing that mimics a '2 person tent' -> able to fit two people in it -> has a 'round' outer surface, with a triangular tip -> able to get in and out from two sides Testing out Pattern for Tent- Most of the clothing I made are based on patterns that are pre-made, and all I had to do was cut out the fabrics from those patterns - Therefore, I had to experiment with how I cut my pattern for the actual tent piece - I started cutting my experimental patterns in a small scale, 1:10cm - I made the patterns using newspaper first, then pinned it to the waterproof fabric to sew them together - When I first sewn the front piece to the side piece, I have accidentally sewn the 'wrong' side to the 'right side', instead of 'right' sides facing each other, and after unpicking the threads and trying to sew them together again, I have repeated the same mistake - Therefore, I had to cut the pattern again and sew the fabrics together without repeating the same mistake twice - I also tried changing the tips of the tent a bit, but they did not seem to make a big difference when sewn together Adding Zips to the Tent- As the small sized tents are really small, I did not add any zips to it, and have to add them directly on the official one - I have tried searching for around 165cm long zips at town, but no shops sell zips that long, therefore I had to order continuous zips online - The problem with continuous zips is that they do not have a stopper that will stop the zips from falling of the garment when pulled to the end of the zip -> Therefore I had to zip from the top to the bottom, in order to open the tent up, and zip from bottom to top to join the pieces together --> which is totally opposite of what you normally do with jackets -> I also have to hand sew fabric stoppers at both bottom sides of the zip, in order to stop the zip slider from falling off the zip - I have also chose a zip reversible slider, to show that I still have control of the zip, when others want to take control over it -> I can choose who to open the tent for, and whether I want to invite them into the tent with me Inserting wire to the top of the tent- With the 'experimental' pieces for the tent, the 'tents' could stand by themselves and make a flat surface at the top - However, with the official piece, because it is a lot larger and heavier, therefore it could not stand on its own, and needs a wire at the top to make the body of the tent reach outwards, instead of collapsing towards the body - At first, I thought that I can insert the wire at the very top of the tent, like the 'smaller tents', however, the fabric seem to be pulling the wire inwards, making a rhombus/ kite shape, instead of a square - Therefore, I had to lower the position of the wire, so that the height from the tip of the tent to the wire is longer than the length of one side of the wire - During last term, I have thought about attaching large spikes to the 'black' side of the vest, however, if I make large spikes with fabric and stuffings, the spikes won't have a sharp edge, instead the spikes would be soft and lumpy, therefore, I thought about using yarn wires like I did in the first term - The yarn wires are hard and sharp, while also conveying movement with its curves - At first, I haven't thought about what fabric I would like to use on the other side of the vest -> I thought about dying the fabric with pink, blue and purple, but there aren't any fabric dye in the art shop in town, therefore I searched around the fabric store for fabrics with multiple colours - In the fabric shop, I have encountered two different 'rainbow blended' fabrics, one of the fabric's colours are more vibrant, while the other one's colour is more soft -> I think that the softer 'rainbow blended' fabric will suit my vest well, as I am trying to convey backstabbing, the colours act us multiple players that create a harmony like surrounding, and looks like they're blending in really well, not knowing what is hidden underneath all of the cheerful looking surface 13 May 2019- I have cut out a waist vest pattern and sewed the 'rainbow' side and black side without attaching them yet 14 May 2019- I have started attaching the two pieces together, in the same way I did with the cloak - However, after sewing them together, I realised that I could not turn it inside out, therefore, I revisited the instructions and realised that I should not have sewn the sides together - I have unpicked the sides and followed the instructions, which then I was able to turn the vest inside-out 15 May 2019- I have put stuffings between the two sides of the vest, and sewn the hole together to secure the stuffings in the vest - I have then inserted the yarn wires in the vest Reflection- When I’m wearing the vest with the rainbow outer layer, people would think that I’m in a good friendship with several friends and things seem wonderful, but there’s these wires stabbing into my back
-> furthermore, the stuffings make the vest look like a 'life jacket', where it makes you feel like you're saved and comforting, like a big soft cushion - When I reverse it, people will notice these wires, and how these darkness are invading me and making me feel more distant to others in a literal sense, as they would get hurt if they stand too close to the vest 9th May 2019- I have unpicked all of the bubble cushions from the previous skirt I made last term, so that I could reuse them on my new skirt - I have sewed the body of the skirt and cut out the waist band that could secure the skirt, and avoiding the skirt to frail 11 May 2019- I have sewed the waist band to the skirt and inserted a elastic band in the waist band and started sewing bubble cushions on the skirt - I have sewn half of the skirt today, and the waist band is still secured onto the skirt 12 May 2019- I have finished sewing the bubble cushions onto the skirt, and the waist band is secured on the skirt
- Furthermore, I have tried wearing the skirt, and it fits well on my hips Things I did well last term- The black/white cloak - Bubble skirt -> Simple, abstract, possess symbolic meanings and costume, instead of just being a piece of clothing Things to Improve- The waisted apron with syringe -> Too literal and illustrative --> Therefore won't be included in degree show - Performance -> Too narrative and literal --> Staging series of photographs in particular poses instead *** Things to do this term ***1. Make the reversible vest with black wired yarn
2. Remake the bubble skirt in the correct order, with attaching waist band to the skirt, then add the 'bubble cushions' after 3. Remake the tent, add zips to cover the whole body, and look more like a shelter 4. Take photos of wearing the garments in particular poses - Last term I did a performance that tried to reflect on the backstory of my pieces, however they were a bit too narrative, so I tried taking still images of myself posing in the costumes - However, the photographs were not in the same light condition, some were brighter while some are darker
- Furthermore, I would like to photograph in a room with lighter floors - The poses did not convey any emotions or meanings as well, so I need to plan my poses more carefully and thoroughly |
