During this term, at first, I have looked at Kazuko Miyamoto's string installations and based my minimalistic, abstract string sculptures on her installation. However, I thought that they did not give me any resonance or trigger anything from me. After that, I have looked into Eva Hesse's works, which are based on her personal experiences, tempting me to further investigate her works.
I believe that in order to make great art, the viewers have to be able to react and reflect upon the work. Hesse's works have inspired me to make works that are personal and intimate to me. I believe the works I have created could bring resonance to most people, making them remember their sweet memories as well as those bitter memories. The monotonic colour used for the background of various relationship shows the dichotomy of love, where there is a definite split between existence and the lack there of. The colour on the other hand was well complemented by the background and shows how emotions was build upon the state of the relationship. The out flow of the strings shows the origin of these emotions stems from the very existence of the relationship, and from that, we could imagine that these emotions are to be related to the whole experience of the relationship. However, the plain background reminds the audience that such emotion roots from a fundamental basis, the existence of love, or in the other case, the lack of it. The vibrant use of colours in the strings helps to convey the common emotions felt in a relationship, but also allows audiences to put in their own interpretation on the volume, length and colour of the strings, potentially associating their own experiences with what is presented by the artist. However, the simplistic model of background plus string is then being meaningfully twisted to provide a twist to the audience, and thus evoke a sense of disjunction to the audience. Such disjunction mirrors the deviation from what is expected by the artist in that relationship. A blank piece of paper could represent the lack of emotions that should have existed. At the same time, this provided a sense of uniqueness to each segment of her relationship journey.

After experimenting with different compositions and coloured threads, I have decided to take these experiments and combine them with my previous relationship experiences. I wish to take these experiments to a more personal and intimate level like Eva Hesse.
From the recent experiment, I have shown a direct contrast between 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' relationships. However, relationships could not be expressed by just using black and white threads, as there are more emotions involved in love. Therefore, I have decided to experiment with other different surface background and colour threads.
Personal Background- Strong attachment to parents
- Deeply affected by the tragic loss of her mother - Characterised as "insecure" by family and friends - "being an artist means to see, to observe, to investigate. It means trying to understand and portray people, their emotions, their strengths and faults. I paint what I see and feel to express life in all its reality and movement" - I have jumped from focusing on the theme 'Logic and Emotion' to 'Relationships'
- Relationships have been a big part of my life, and it is something that has affected me a lot - As a child, my parents were always busy working, and I would have to spend most of the time alone - I have always craved for someone who cares and loves me, and wished for someone who is willing to spare time for me and accompany me - Two extremes on the spectrum
- Dualist: reason belongs in the mind, emotion in our body - Question: 'Is there a balance between logic and emotions?' circus europa, Michael Kvium, 2017- Unfolds current, epoch-making events
- Using raw humour and mordant irony to thematise tourism, flood of news, wars, refugee disasters and climate threats - Kvium has turned the theatrical universe political reality and everyday life as a showmanship and drama - Once the audience step into the ring where the circus artistes entertain, they become part of a morbid story about Europe where the earth opens up and the wild animal has broken out The Ship, Eske Kath & Oh Land, 2017- The Ship is created by visual artist Eske Kath and musician Nanna Fabricius Oland aka Oh Land
- The Ship is exhibited in Nikolaj Kunsthal, Church of Saint Nicholas - The church's organ has also been included with an interactive sound composition - The Ship is made up of three- storey container, with four different sections that represents different ideas - The Ship is a symbol of every person's voyage or the common voyage that we all undertake together - The hull of the ship is invisible, but the delineation of it in its surroundings where waves and colourful sunken containers create their own sensuous world - Eske Kath and Oh Land makes the viewers question 'what do we carry with us?' 'Where is the ship headed?' 'Where does it come from?' and 'what awaits it out there in the horizon? - There were two different exhibitions happening in Malmo's Modern Art Museum
-> Ulf Rollof's Urgent -> Public Movement: On Arts, Politics, and Dance norm form- Uses design as a tool to challenge norms relating to power relationships in society
- Challenging social norms means visualising and questioning why certain individuals have more power than others -> Based on seven grounds of discrimination: gender, cross-gender identity or expression, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, physical functionality, religion or other faith and age - Aims to combat discrimination and promote work for equal human rights |
